Jelly Moulds

Shelley produced a range of jelly moulds with a wonderful sculptural quality as the shape inside was mimicked on the outside of the mould. They were advertised as 'easy to turn out' - the theory was that with an equal thickness of earthenware to all parts of the mould, heat would travel evenly when loosening the jelly. This was helped also by the high quality finish and materials used in manufacture and earned them a Good Housekeeping Institute Award. The first named shape, Armadillo, was introduced in 1904 by Wileman but the outer surface on this and other early moulds, did not reflect the inner styling and did not enjoy the same simplicity of use as the later Shelley designs. Apart from this, there is little information from which to date the various shapes other than their appearance in the catalogues of 1922, 1925, 1929 and 1933. All production of jelly moulds ceased in 1940 when the earthenware works closed.
